Happy Gotcha Day, Dante!
A Dark Season
One year ago today, this big guy walked into my life and changed my whole world.
Leading up to September 2024, I was in a very sad, dark place. Life had knocked me down again, and this time it felt harder than ever to get back up.
Then, a chance scroll through Facebook changed everything.
Dante’s Story
Dante was on the verge of being “put down.”
His mum had fallen ill and moved into an extended care facility back in June. His family spent weeks trying to find him a new home, but his health issues made it difficult. Out of ideas, they had scheduled his final appointment. Dante was out of time.
I wasn’t looking for a dog. I was still mourning the loss of my two huskies after my divorce in May. I could barely take care of myself—how could I take on another living being?
The Post That Wouldn’t Go Away
The first time I saw Dante’s post was at the end of July. Just a simple scroll and there he was, with the words “needing a new home.”
I purposely didn’t click—I didn’t want to see his eyes (you know what I mean). Since I didn’t open it, and didn’t even know who had shared it, that should have been the end of it. Only it wasn’t.
The post came back again in mid-August. I scrolled past, convincing myself he would find a home. But it kept resurfacing. By the third and fourth time, I couldn’t ignore it any longer.
On Sunday, September 15th, I finally opened it.
Out of Time
Dante was out of time. His family had exhausted all options, and his appointment to “cross the rainbow bridge” was set for Tuesday morning at 9 a.m.
I burst into tears. No one wanted him. I knew that feeling all too well.
So I messaged a stranger, who connected me to another stranger, and suddenly I was jumping into something on pure instinct. I wasn’t convinced I wanted a dog—or that I could even care for one—but I knew I could at least keep him alive until someone else could.
The Day Everything Changed
On Monday, September 16th, I drove 2.5 hours to meet him at his mum’s house.
On Tuesday, September 17th, Dante didn’t make that 9 a.m. appointment. Instead, at noon, he arrived at my home.
And by then, my heart already knew he was staying.
I saved him—and he saved me. Sometimes angels arrive in the form of a 112-pound German Shepherd/Malamute.
One Year Later
365 days later, we’re still together.
Smiling. Loving. Living.
Reflection
This past year has reminded me that sometimes healing doesn’t come the way we expect. For me, it came with fur, paws, and a whole lot of love.
When I was in my darkest place, Dante gave me a reason to keep moving, keep loving, and keep living.
If you’re struggling right now, I hope this story reminds you that second chances exist—for people and for pets. Sometimes, what feels like an ending can actually be the beginning of something beautiful.
